Increase your resolve…..

Most of us need a car, but how many of us buy the car we need as opposed to the car we want? For most of us a safe reliable car is all we need, but many of us want more, we want luxuries like air conditioning, a good CD, electric windows, heated seats, cruise control… these are not things we need, they are things we want. If you were saving for a car, and you stopped going out for meals, went without a holiday, and put away £400 per month for 12 months, you would have £4,800 to buy a car. The desire for that car would have to be stronger than your desire to go out and go on holiday. On a scale of 1-10 with 10 being maximum effort, you would be putting in 10. There are not many people that have got that level of resolve (I certainly haven’t). Most people operate between 5-8. Even if your resolve is strong, you still need the techniques and the strategy to succeed, after all if you are 100% intent on seeing a sunset and you spend every evening looking east, you are not going to achieve your goal. Giving up smoking is for many people not easy, but every year hundreds of thousands of people manage it. Make no mistake that’s fantastic. However, many of these same people struggle and fail to lose weight; Why? the difference between weight loss and stopping smoking is just that – there’s no stopping eating. It’s not a case of deleting one programme (i.e. smoking) and that’s it, but you must adapt existing programmes and make changes to something that you have to do every day, in order to survive. This requires some specific fine tuning when it comes to changing behaviours. Over the last 20 years I have written 2 best -selling “diet books”, worked with celebrities and people from all walks of life, been a consultant for one of the country’s leading Diet and Fitness Clubs, and helped literally thousands of people lose weight, often many stones. I ran my own chain of Health Clubs in the Midlands for twelve years, and some of the results I achieved with my clients was sensational, but I noticed one thing, and it bothered me greatly. Many of these people lost loads of weight, but STILL felt bad about themselves. They had to deprive themselves of many pleasures to achieve it, and there were many who just didn’t have the “will power” to achieve their goals, and gave up. WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE?

NEURO LINGUISTIC PROGRAMMING (NLP) is simply the study of human processes. What it shows us, is how our brains work and we know that many of the changework that happens, actually happens in our unconscious mind before we are aware of it consciously. This means we can use our imagination to “upload” new behaviours. Try this simple exercise: Stand up and place your right arm out in front of you and point forward. Now keeping your feet still, move your arm around to the back and stretch as far round as you can, notice where specifically your finger points too. Slowly bring your arm back to the front. Now this time, do the same thing but IN YOUR IMAGINATION, keep your arm by your side, close your eyes and PRETEND you are lifting it and pointing forward, see what you would see if you were looking at your finger in your minds eye. Now imagine your muscles and joints are totally relaxed and fluid, keep your feet still but imagine your arm moving freely around behind you, see through your minds eye as it smoothly moves past the point where it was before, see it go an inch, then 6 inches further, now even further and imagine you are completely relaxed  and your arm moves almost 360 degrees round and see what that would look like in your minds eye. Now imagine bringing your arm back around to the front and lowering it. This time, with eyes open, raise your arm and repeat the exercise remembering what it feels like now you know have imagined you can stretch further.

You will probably notice that you can now go much further than you could the first time. What has changed? Not your ability, or your physical state; the only thing that has changed is that you had an imagined experience that allowed you to achieve something you didn’t think possible. That’s the power of your imagination, you will only ever achieve what you believe you can achieve. Who knows you best?

Where do you turn when you are looking for answers? Who do you go to? The reality is that no one knows you better than YOU what’s best for you, In fact you have a PHD in being you. The problem is we don’t always do what’s best for us! How often do you sit and think about what is really best for you, and do the right thing; or are you often too afraid to take that step? Is there something you would like to be or do differently, either physically, emotionally, spiritually or professionally? Are you settling for less than you really want?
If so, is it because you are holding onto something from your past? Or is it because you lack motivation or energy to change, or maybe you just don’t know how (yet!)

We are almost always stronger and more capable than we believe ourselves to be.
